Honors Program


The Honors Program at WSSU provides challenging and stimulating educational opportunities and cultural experiences for the academically talented student. The program frees both the student and the faculty from many of the restraints of the traditional classroom structure and encourages independence and critical inquiry. Students participate actively in intensive intellectual discussion and debate in small classes and seminars and engage in special projects and research.

Admissions to the program is categorized as provisional, full or associate. Provisional Admission is extended to entering freshmen depending upon rank in high school class, grade-point average, and SAT score. Full Admission is offered to entering freshmen and sophmores who have recently completed at least 15 hours of college work at the university and have maintained a grade point average of at least 3.0 and a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on all work completed at other institutions. Associate Admission is offered to students within 60 hours of graduation who have not taken any honors courses but who have recently completed at least 15 hours at the universtiy and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0.

Honors Awards

Winston-Salem State University offers two honors awards, General Honors and Departemental Honors, and an Honors Bachelor's Degree.

General Honors Award Requirements:

  1. Twelve hours of general education honors courses from two departments; 3 hours in courses at or above the 2000 level.
  2. One semester hour of honors colloquium.
  3. Minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 in honors courses.
  4. Two elementary, college-level courses in the same foreign language or exemption by examination.
  5. Three semester hours of computer science or data processing.
  6. Full admission to the Honors Program.
Departmental Honors Award Requirements:
  1. Three semester hours of upper-division honors credit in the student's major program.
  2. Six semester hours of upper-division credits in any area.
  3. Honors Thesis (3 semester hours).
  4. Minimum grade point average of 3.0 in honors courses.
  5. Completion of at least 90 semester hours of college-level work with no I's, D's, or F's.
  6. Minimum grade point average of 3.0 in student's major and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  7. Full or Associate admission to the Honors Program.
Honors Bachelor's Degree Requirements:
  1. Completion of the General and Departmental Honors Awards requirements.
  2. Full admission to the Honors Program.
  3. Formal application for graduation and completion of all university graduation requirements.
  4. Formal application to Honors Program Director.
