Program Synopsis
The WSSU Computer Science & Technology Scholarship Program (CSTSP), funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) -- Computer Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarships (CSEMS) Program, is designed to substantially increase the academic success of academically talented, financially needy students, enabling them to enter the high-technology workforce following completion of an associate, baccalaureate, or graduate-level degree in computer science, or information technology. Scholarship awards may be up to $3,125/year.
Program Requirements
The CSTSP enrolls entering pre-majors (freshmen/sophomores) and majors (juniors/seniors) into an Academic Excellence Development Program which is designed to assist students in achieving and maintaining a cumulative 3.0> GPA. Participation is required of all students who want to apply for a scholarship in the future and those awarded a scholarship. Computer Science freshmen and sophomores are eligible to apply for scholarships when all scholarship award requirements are met. Programs, activities, and services provided by the WSSU Computer Science & Technology Scholarship Program are open to all undergraduate students majoring in Computer Science or Information Technology and to selected graduate students majoring in Computer Science and Information Technology.
Scholarship Award Requirements
CSTSP students who achieve the required GPA, are accepted into the major, and meet all other program requirements are awarded scholarships for up to two years (dependent upon funding availability). Scholarship awards may be up to $3,125/year. GPA at the time of application to the program, along with other CSEM criteria, will be used to determine scholarship eligibility.
Application Process
A completed application, most recent transcript (high school, community college, or college), and a copy of the most recent WSSU Financial Aid Award Statement should be submitted.

Academic Excellence Development Program
The Academic Excellence Development Program includes: academic performance, advising, student support services, mentoring and professional experience. CSTSP is the WSSU Computer Science scholarship program funded by the National Science Foundation CSEM grant. This program is designed to substantially increase the academic success of academically talented, financially needy students, enabling them to enter the high-technology workforce following completion of the BS or MS degree in computer science or information technology. The Academic Excellence Development Program is open to all Computer Science Students.
Academic Performance
– The academic performance goal for all computer science majors is a 3.0
GPA. Not only is
this one of the requirements for the CSEM Scholarship, it is a requirement
for many internships, co-ops, other
scholarships, and other professional programs at the university.
Advising
– Faculty academic advisors and research mentors
serve as liaisons between the CSTSP scholar and the
Program Director. Peer tutors and professionals who serve as mentors
also provide support for scholars.
Student Support Services – All CSTSP scholars will be required to participate in Academic Excellence Development
Seminars that will be conducted by computer science faculty and external professionals to address academic deficiencies and provide skills needed for success in the major. All CSTSP scholars will enroll in a 1sh Special Topics course designed to allow scholars to interact with the faculty, learn about computer science, learn about faculty research, and identify an initial area of interest. Additionally, all scholars will be required to participate in small study groups, provide weekly academic progress reports, use the services of a peer tutor (or serve as a peer tutor if the course grade is “A”) for all computer science, mathematics, science, and English courses.
Undergraduate Mentoring – Undergraduate scholars will be assigned a faculty research mentor or a computer science
professional mentor. Faculty may advise AND mentor the scholars or the faculty and research mentor may be different individuals. Faculty will provide weekly dialog sessions with protégés, involve the protégés in introductory small group research activities (2-6 hours per week) and plan the research project for the scholarship award period. During the years the scholarship is awarded, scholars will have increased interaction and support from the faculty via identification and application to summer internship or research programs, and participation in the faculty/scholar research activities, including Research Courses.
Graduate Mentoring - Graduate scholars, who have not been undergraduate CSTSP scholars, will participate in
Academic Excellence Development activities appropriate for graduate students. When scholars are admitted to the graduate program a faculty advisor will be assigned based upon the scholar’s graduate program focus. Faculty will monitor academic progress, identify tutorial services, establish study groups, and advise the scholar’s research or project.
Professional Experience –
Research, Co-Op, or Internship
provide the professional experience vital to academic
excellence. Each CSTSP scholar will be required to
participate in at least one research internship, corporate/agency
internship,
or corporate/agency co-op prior to graduation. CSTSP scholars will not
be limited to only working with
computer science faculty. Scholars
may engage in NSF REU summer research programs, NASA, DOE, NSA, ONR, NOAA
summer research programs, or other agency
summer programs. Scholars may also gain experience with companies in the
Piedmont Triad Research Park or the Research Triangle Park.
